The island of Shikoku is quite well known for its pilgrimage.
People travel to 88 temples on Shikoku, tracing the path of Kobo Daishi.
People on the pilgrimage wear what are essentially death robes and carry a wooden staff with a miniature gravestone on the top.
They wear sedge hats and have huge pouches around their waist.
Should any pilgrims die on their path, they are to be buried where they lie.
Their clothes have the words "Dogyo Ninin" (meaning "We two, traveling together" - refering to Kobo Daishi) written in caligraphy nearly everywhere.

Here's a map of the 88 temples.  I lived within a mile of temple #1.  It's on the far right on the map.
